Junior Football Championship '22 Relegation Final
St Ultan's 1:13
Moynalty made the short trip up to Carlanstown for this do or die relegation final in the Junior A Championship against St Ultan's.
After early scores from Kian Lynch, James Cassidy & Ollie Sheridan along with a brace from St Ultans it was clear to see this was going to be tight throughout.
After trading numerous scores with half time looming, it was Moynalty who went in at the break one to the good. Moynalty 0:08, St Ultan's 0:07.
Early doors second half, what we hoped would be the turning point of the game came our way, a well worked team goal had John Brogan on the end of the move to go four points up.
As we expected though, St Ultan's never gave up and clawed back two points immediately.
After a further exchange of scores, turning point No.2 arrived – but this time for the men in Black & Green, with a goal from the penalty spot to put them 1 up with a few minutes to go.
The ever-busy James Cassidy scored a superb point draw the game once again. With the 30 minutes almost up, extra time loomed but St Ultan's had other ideas and after a quick counterattack managed to stick the ball over the bar for a one-point win and maintain their Junior A status for 2023.
After a truly titanic battle and the players and management were left heartbroken as they will now contest in the Junior B Championship next season. Great heart and spirit were shown, which cannot be questioned, and our guys can be truly proud of their efforts on the night.
Special mention on performances to Johnny Lynch, James Cassidy, and Ronan Mc Mahon.
Our man of the match goes to John Brogan for his non stop hard work at full forward and his contribution of 1-01
