Coolrite Junior B Football Championship Final
Moynalty 0:10 Slane 2:10 On Saturday 7th October Moynalty supporters attended in huge numbers to Páirc Tailteann, bringing noise, for this eagerly awaited Championship Final between the two old rivals of Moynalty and Slane. It was Slane that made the blistering start, from a Matt Tully effort which rebounded off the post, Podge McGowan pounced to crash the ball to the back of the Moynalty net. If that wasn't already the start our boys did not want, Slane's go-to man Tully fielded a kick-out and got the return pass from Eanna Mooney to hit another goal to the back of the net past the despairing Johnny Lynch. We hadn’t hit double digits on the clock. Slane had the chance of a third goal only for the combination of keeper Lynch and Liam Brogan keeping the ball out. Slane did add another point to their tally before Moynalty got their first score, which was a pointed free in the 18th minute by Joey Gilsenan, who then added another 2 minutes later. Pauric O' Connor then managed to get a point moments later to leave the score Moynalty 0:03, Slane 2:01 after 21 mins. We were up and running and starting to settle into the task. Christy Cahill got Moynalty’s last score of the half after we lost Joey to a black card right before half time. In the lead up to the short whistle it was the East Meath side who added three more points before referee Robbie Barrett called for the ball. In the second half Moynalty were much more in the ascendancy as our support grew louder and louder. Slane managing only 1 point in the third quarter as Moynalty pushed and pushed and cut the deficit to just four points. Another score here would have really notched up the dial on Slane who couldn’t get going at all after the break. But much to their credit, this was as close as it got from a Moynalty point of view. Slane managed to get back into their groove and get, not just vital scores to distinguish the Moynalty fightback, but vital scores at vital times. Cormac Kearney and Anthony Nevin added a point each before Gilsenan added Moynalty’s last point of the game. Slane finished up by getting the last scores of the game leaving the full-time score; Moynalty 0:10, Slane 2:10 Congratulations to Slane, who on the day, were worthy champions and played the better football. Their lightning start to the match inside the first 10 minutes turned out to be the major factor in the deciding of the game as the score line suggests. For our lads it was not to be our day. There was so much progress gained, so much enjoyment delivered to all the clubs’ supporters and most importantly the children of the village and club who look to you all as their heroes. We want to take this opportunity too, to thank the management team of Derek O' Brien, Keith Brady, Eddie Coldrick and Stephen Dawson for bringing all of the above throughout this Championship campaign and we all look forward to next year already. We will come again.
